Porsches are renowned for their every day usability, although it's hard to believe this is the main reason for which people buy them. However, in its most recent commercial, Porsche promotes the practical side of its 911, Cayman and Boxster sports cars.

The ad is made up of four short fragments called ‘Snowmobile’, ‘Pickup Truck’, ‘Getaway Car’ and ‘School Bus' that show a 911 Carrera 4S, a Cayman, a 911 Carrera GTS and a 911 Turbo involved in everyday activities like shopping or picking up the kids from school. As a bonus, Porsche released a fifth fragment that didn't make it to the 30-second ad, called ‘Pet Carrier’. Take a look at the videos after the jump.

Good news for Porsche owners in America who'd like to have their sports cars and SUV models tuned by Techart as the German company has finally opened a US headquarters in Irvine California. "The new subsidiary ensures a faster product supply to all its customers and sales partners," Techart said in a statement.

Earlier this month, we told you about Porsche spokesman Hans-Gerd Bode's interview with Bloomberg where he discussed the firm's plans to unveil a new model at the upcoming North American International Auto Show in Detroit (January 10 to 23). Today, the Stuttgart-based sports car maker made it official by announcing that it will be giving a new model its world debut at the Detroit Show. It's been a good four years since the last time we saw Porsche at the Detroit Motor Show, otherwise known as the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), but the famous Stuttgart automaker is getting ready to make a big comeback at the 2011 edition of the event. Not only will Porsche make it to the 2011 NAIAS, but the company revealed through one of its spokesman that it is planning to premiere a “spectacular” model.

“We’ll have something spectacular to show there,” said Hans- Gerd Bode, a spokesman for Porsche, in an interview on Friday. “You’ll have to wait and be surprised.” As you may have guessed, the Porsche official did not reveal any other details leaving us with nothing but speculation at this point.

Even in this harsh economical climate, Porsche sales continue to grow, as the German maker shifted 21,218 units in the first three months of the 2010 short fiscal year (August 1 – December 31). That's an impressive 86.4% growth compared to the same period last year, although Porsche management admits that the prior-year quarter was "relatively weak", so a higher growth rate was expected.

Porsche has chosen the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show to unveil its finest version yet of the Cayman sports coupe. The new Cayman R is a stripped-out, lighter and more powerful variant of the mid-engined 'S' model. Porsche says that in its special alphabet, the letter 'R' is for "responsive and refined – but most especially for racy."

Stuttgart's team of engineers started off by eliminating any unnecessary items for purists such as the air conditioning, audio system and complex door handles -owners will have to do with simple door pulls on this German baby. Porsche says more savings were achieved through the use of lightweight components including the carbon fiber bucket seats and the lightest 19 inch wheels offered by the company weighing in at less than 40kg / 80 lbs.

We just learned that the new mid-engined sports model that Porsche announced for the LA Auto Show will be the Cayman R. Think of it as a more hardcore version of the Cayman S (pictured above) that has shed a few pounds here and there, and comes equipped with a mildly tuned version of the flat-six engine. According to our sources, the Cayman R also benefits from upgraded suspension and brake components as well as the necessary aero kit, bespoke lightweight alloy wheels and interior modifications. This just in; Porsche announced today that it will present a world premiere of "a mid-engine sports car" at next week's Los Angeles Auto Show. The Stuttgart automaker did not get into any details, but unless it's the production version of the 918 Spyder hybrid flagship, our guess would be it's either a special edition or a new version of one of the Boxster roadster or Cayman coupe models.

A new and rather aggressive advertising campaign regarding the Nissan 370Z and GT-R sports cars has kicked off in Britain. The company launched a series of poster and print adverts highlighting the fact that both sports cars are better in terms of performance yet cost less than their equivalent German rivals.

And mind you, Nissan isn't being polite as the automaker is using tongue-in-cheek phrases in the ads such as "The Winner Hans Down," "The Germans Came Off Wurst," "Kaisers Chiefed" and "Deutschland Deutschland Über-Rated".

To further frustrate its German adversaries, the Japanese company took an Audi TTS bearing the slogan "More expensive, slower and less powerful than a Nissan 370Z" around the streets of London. It was joined by a Porsche Cayman adorned with the words "I dream of being as fast as a Nissan 370Z". Ouch...

Porsche is offering (at least in Europe) buyers a new choice of individualization options for the Boxster roadster and Cayman coupe with the release of two equipment (Comfort and Infotainment) and two design packages (Design and Design Sport) that add a host of bits and bobbles to the two cars.

Starting with the Comfort Package, it includes climate control, bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights, cruise control, rain sensor and an embossed Porsche crest on the headrests. The package also adds a wind-deflector on the Boxster and Boxster S models.

Just weeks away from the bi-annual Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany, Porsche tuning specialist TechArt is unveiling the first of several new upgrades to come for the facelifted versions of the Boxster roadster and Caymane coupe models. Included in the initial package are two different Aerokits, daytime running lights, a set of sport springs, as well as carbon interior packages that subtly transform the looks of the two Porsche models.

TechArt's aero kits that are said to optimize the Boxster and Cayman's drag coefficients comprise of a front spoiler with a spoiler lip that match the body's color and new LED daytime running lights, rear wing, side sills and a new rear apron with an integrated diffuser that houses the twin tailpiped of the more sonorous sport exhaust system.

The bodykit can be rounded off with 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels available in various designs and colors while additional upgrades include TechArt's sport springs and a lowering kit that reduced the ride height by up to 30 mm.

For the interior, TechArt offerings include a variety of options ranging from a full leather treatment with contrasting seams and decorative carbon fiber trim to aluminum sport pedals, a three-spoke sport steering wheel and illuminated entry sills with individual logos.

During their press conference at the Geneva Motor Show, RUF presented their latest Cayman-based CTR-3 model which comes with a twin turbo charged 3.8-liter flat six cylinder engine producing 700HP and 890Nm of torque as well as the RUF Greenster, an all-electric car based on the Porsche 911 Targa that is equipped with a 270 kW Siemens electric motor with 695 lb-ft of torque. Unveiled together with the freshened Boxster at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, Porsche's facelifted Cayman coupe has received a few minor cosmetic revisions as well as a new version of the flat-six engine, offering more power but also improved fuel efficiency. The basic Cayman features a 2.9-liter direct-injection straight six that cranks out 265HP while the 3.4-litre power unit in the S-version, benefiting from direct fuel injection, now delivers 320HP. The Cayman is scheduled for market launch in February 2009.

The 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show saw the unveiling of the facelifted 2009 Porsche Boxster and Cayman models (click here for photos and details). In true Porsche fashion, both cars feature significant mechanical upgrades as well as near invisible cosmetic changes. Highlights include the more powerful yet also more fuel efficient direct-injection boxer engines and the option of Porsche's new PDK double-clutch sequential-shift gearbox. Sales of the revised Cayman coupe and Boxster Roadster will begin in early 2009 but until then, skip the jump to get a taste of both vehicles in the videos that follow.

Pride of place on Porsche's Los Angeles Auto Show goes to the refreshed 2009 Boxster and Cayman models that benefit from new flat-six boxer engines, a double-clutch PDK gearbox, suspension revisions and subtle cosmetic changes. On the front end, the 2009 Boxster and Cayman gain new halogen headlights with integrated direction indicators that are reminiscent of those found on the Carrera GT as well as new LED daytime running lights. At the rear end, both models feature slightly larger 'swoopy' taillights, new exhaust tailpipes and redesigned lower bumper areas.

But as one might expect, what's really important about Porsche's new mid-engined sports cars is well hidden underneath the skin as both models gain much of the tech seen on the recently facelifted 911s. The basic versions now come with a 2.9-liter direct-injection straight six that cranks out 255HP in the Boxster and 265HP in the Cayman, an increase by 10 and, respectively, 20HP over the preceding models. The 3.4-litre power unit in the S-versions, benefiting from direct fuel injection, now delivers 310HP in the Boxster S and 320HP in the Cayman S, a 15 and 25HP bump respectively.

For the first time, both the Boxster and the Cayman are available with Porsche's PDK double-clutch gearbox which not only shifts gears even more quickly but according to Porsche, it also helps reduce fuel consumption. Equipped with the PDK double-clutch gearbox, the Roadster and Coupe accelerate to 100 km/h or 62 mph 0.1 seconds faster than with the manual six-speed gearbox featured on the "basic" models.

Porsche hasn't published the exact performance figures for all versions but it did announce that the Cayman S with PDK and Launch Control accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 while the Boxster 2.9 with its six-speed manual gearbox completes the same exercise in 5.9 sec.

In terms of fuel economy, Porsche said that with the PDK, the new 2.9-litre boxer engine make do with 8.9 lt/100 km (equal to 26.4 mpg US) or 11 percent less than the former models with Tiptronic S. The 3.4-litre versions reduce fuel consumption by an even more significant 16 percent to 9.2 lt/100 km (equal to 25.5 mpg US).

Other improvement for the 2009 models include the new suspension set-up that promises to further enhance handling and the new audio and communication systems in the interior.

Porsche's new mid-engined models are entering the market in February 2009 with the base price for the Boxster in Europe set at €38,600 and the Cayman's at €41,700. The corresponding prices for the Boxster S are €46,700 and the Cayman S €51,500. If you add VAT and national specifications, the Boxster retails in Germany at €46,142, the Cayman at €49,831, the Boxster S, at €55,781 and the Cayman S at €61,493.
